Disjointed and Self-Indulgent submitted by Beatlesfan04 on July 5, 2023, 1:53pm The description of the book is nothing like what the content actually is. This book was definitely written in the time of movies like "He's just not that into you" and "Valentine's Day" where a bunch of different story lines seem disparate but somehow interact with one another. However, I don't think it was very well done. It often felt disjointed and self-indulgent. It could have been about half as long as it was. TIme somehow flies from 1999 to 2001 and characters stayed with people and in situations that they probably would not have for that long (ex: Jess and Leon). It could have been paired down while giving the same message. You could tell the author was trying really hard to be intellectual and hit a point home, but because it was so disparate it was hard to follow and understand what the author meant. The book also discusses Hasidic Judaism in a way that seems anti-semitic. It focuses A LOT on how focused the Hasidic Jews are on money and using people for their money. Other characters show outward disapproval and call them manipulative. It very much felt overtly anti-semitic. Overall, it was a long-overwrought book. I read it quickly though because I just wanted it to be finished, and I was hoping the connections would all come together meaningfully in the end. Also, content warning, it contains the timeframe of 9/11, which also felt very forced into a greater intellectual narrative and seemed like the easy way out to solve some conflict. The book's title and description do not really give an accurate view of this book. I would not recommend it.
