Totally Engaging Story submitted by sdunav on August 13, 2011, 10:10am This is a fascinating look at animals, people, and a non-profit corporation engaged in the sometimes contradictory goals of entertainment and conservation. "Life in the Garden of Captives" is the perfect subtitle for this book.

It reads like a novel - it's hard to put down! This is some of the best nonfiction I've read this year - well-written, thought provoking, and eye-opening.

Hard to Put Down submitted by jfogart on August 14, 2014, 1:18pm Thomas French's writing is superb and reads like a novel. If you've ever felt guilty about visiting a zoo and wondered whether they're there for our entertainment or their conservation, pick up this book. Thought provoking without a bold opinion - mainly the facts for you to decide the morality of individuals and our society for yourself.

Well-written submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on June 16, 2021, 8:26pm I’ve always loved stories about animals and stories about zoos. This book is somewhat about the Lowry Park Zoo and a whole lot about the personality who rose and fell with it. That wasn’t a huge draw for me… I don’t particularly read animal/zoo stories for human political drama. Nonetheless, it was a well-written story that captures some of the interest and complexity of zoos in the modern animal conservation landscape.
