The Parasol Protectorate Begins submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 20, 2013, 2:00am The first of the five Parasol Protectorate novels, "Soulless" introduces us to Alexia Tarabotti, a single woman in Victorian London who refuses to play society's games that demand a woman act weak and scamper after potential husbands. Her mother and sister despair about her future, but Alexia is far more interested in saving herself--and Great Britain--from vampires who attack innocent people.

As a preternatural (a soulless being who is the opposite of supernatural creatures and can instead turn them human while she touches them), she is a unique being, yet she would hated by the supernatural community and shunned by humans if they knew her secret.

I highly recommend this series, especially to anyone who enjoys steampunk and/or fantasy. The plot keeps readers turning the pages. The novel also positively portrays LGBT characters in Victorian Britain.

Be forewarned, some parts are a tad risque. If it were a movie, it would be rated "R."
