Nice projects, odd attitude submitted by ssands on August 21, 2016, 2:14pm There's some nice projects in this book, mostly made up in more interesting fabrics (oilcloth, inner tubes, upholstery webbing) than you see in most books. There's a few duds, in my opinion, like the fur trappers cap made with a faux fur lining and a large, floral, print exterior that may have once been drapes. However, I don't feel like this book contained a revelation freeing me from to make "mistakes" like "Improv Sewing" did. The projects aren't really that unusual and actually are mostly easy to like. Probably the idea of using large grommets will be the main takeaway for me from this book. I haven't made anything from this book yet, but there seem to be good, clear, instructions.

The introduction starts, "What is a feisty stitcher? Someone who's not afraid to use a sewing machine like a power tool. Plucky crafters like you and me who want to be shown ideas, not given a dizzying tangle of flimsy pattern pieces and complicated instructions and then told to sew along the lines." As if people don't take care when using power tools? Later, it says, "Feisty sewing isn't for sissies!" Way to alienate your core readership, which I'd guess would be people who already enjoy sewing and probably don't think of themselves as fussy sissies.

In an attempt to soothe readers' fears that their machines aren't up to the heavy fabrics used in the projects, the author points out that she used a 20-year-old Bernina and a 1950's Singer. Both of those are actually better machines than an inexpensive new machine is likely to be. I've used a Bernina of that era and it was great. Similarly, Singers were supposed to be very good until a slump in about 30-40 years ago. So that doesn't really mean much about my old, difficult, Brother machine.
