The Miners and the Company in Butte, MT After WWI submitted by Ira Lax on November 17, 2010, 12:40pm This is another in Doig's string of fine Montana historical novels, but the first one taking place in post - World War I Butte. The best drawn characters are the miners and young fleet-footed Russian Famine as the union battles the Anaconda Copper Co. Morrie's job at The Butte Public Library is lovingly evoked, with its Gothic architecture, the staff and patrons, under the imposing director Samuel Sandison, a cover for one of Montana's original cattlemen and vigilantes, Granville Stuart. Stuart was always a major book collector, which he (Sandison) proudly displays on the public library shelves.
