Great book, great author
submitted by elfchild9 on August 16, 2011, 10:30am
This was fun, well-written, and never felt forced. The characters are charming and convincing, just as I expect from Diana Wynne Jones. I found myself picking up the book whenever I had a free moment, hoping to squeeze in a page or two, and usually ended up sitting for much longer than I meant.
I had a few minor bones to pick with the book, mostly concerning characters or devices that felt familiar from Howl's Moving Castle. On the whole, though, it reminded me yet again why DWJ is such a respected author: she just plain writes good books. No fuss, no pretensions, just masterful storytelling.
Magic and Mundane Mixed submitted by kathscot on August 31, 2012, 3:55pm Diana Wynne Jones is so good at making magic seem so off-handedly common that it is easy for the reader to believe the unbelievable. An exciting story with lots of surprises.
