Big Nate Predates The Wimpy Kid submitted by camelsamba on August 19, 2013, 9:27pm People keep comparing this to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but Big Nate was in the funny papers years before Wimpy Kid. Granted, you wouldn't know that by the Ann Arbor paper, since even when it was daily it had limited (and some would say lame) comics because the Detroit papers got first dibs on them. Anyway, Nate is a sarcastic 6th grader, surrounded by a cast of fellow students and teachers. He doesn't much like school and thinks highly of himself, but it does have much appeal to boys of a certain age.

There are two kids of Big Nate books: ones that are reprints of the comic strips (either chronologically or sometimes thematically), and ones that are more narrative with some illustrated elements thrown in. This is one of the latter. In this story, he gets a fortune that says "Today, you will surpass all others." He tries various things to make this come true - and the final result is rather silly but totally appropriate for his character.
