Coming Of Age Lite submitted by pkooger on August 30, 2011, 9:44am Tru Loved is at heart a classic coming of age/sexual awakening story. The inner turmoil of the characters as they find community, fall in love, fight to stay in the closet, come out of the closet, and learn to love themselves and each other is a familiar story. Stories that revolve around a gay character's struggle to find acceptance and love in an unwelcoming community are often fraught with suffering and danger (see My Beautiful Laundrette, The Line of Beauty, Queer as Folk) but this film is a little sunnier in its outlook. Most of the danger involved in coming out of the closet seems to be in the imagination of Lodell. Even the big bad bully turns out to be gay-friendly in the end. If you're looking for a coming out story without the doom and gloom (perhaps one that can be shown to a younger teen audience) this might be your film.
