COMMUNITY REVIEWS

"Brothers" is a B+ submitted by lolitam on October 23, 2010, 8:37am When names like Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman are attached to a film project, right away you can expect good entertainment. If you've got a spare hour and a half, watching Brothers isn't a bad way to spend it. The film features a solid plot line; after US Marine, Sam (Maguire), is assumed dead in Afghanistan, his brother, ex-con Tommy (Gyllenhaal), assumes a role in the life of Sam's wife, Grace (Portman) and her young daughters. The most favorable thing about the movie is that it takes universal themes -- grief, desire, coping -- and cuts out the Hollywood, leaving only human drama. With such big names attached, and such sensitive subject matter, it would be easy to add dialogue meant to tug at the heart strings. Instead, the film almost plays like a reality television show. The mundane (e.g. spilled paint during kitchen renovations) is given its due, and the dialogue is more than believable. Even better, the question of chemistry between Grace and Tommy is answered at a comfortable pace. The ending is just as realistic, although I won't give it away. Suffice it to say that nothing about Brothers is wrapped up neatly, and the viewing experience is so much the better for it. Fun fact: acting wunderkind Carey Mulligan makes a cameo.

A+, due to the great Script AND the Director. submitted by Tassos on January 7, 2019, 6:04am Without the above, the star actors would not have a chance.

let's face it, 9 out of 10 so-called 'movies' from Hollywood are garbage.

This is the 1 out of 10, or even 1 of 100.

Recommended without reservations.
