One ordinary man's quest to become a serious man. Physics professor Larry Gopnik can't believe his life, His wife is leaving him for his best friend, his unemployed brother won't move off the couch, someone is threatening his career, his kids are a mystery and his neighbor is tormenting him by sunbathing nude. Struggling to make sense of it all, Larry consults three different rabbis and their answers lead him on a twisted journey of faith, family, delinquent behavior, and mortality.
DVD, widescreen; Dolby digital 5.1.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not Coen-worthy submitted by bradicus on June 24, 2010, 8:33am A morality play without a plot; a Barton Fink without that Barton-Fink feeling (like a Goodman character to move the boring actors around). The movie presents some good ideas to think about. Unfortunately, they are mired in the dullness of suburbia (and I mean dull). You can skip this one.

fun and satisfying submitted by mccarthy on January 13, 2012, 11:01pm I really enjoyed this. Best to see this without knowing anything about it, not even reading the back of the DVD case.

Fine submitted by c_zhang on June 30, 2019, 4:38pm It was dull.

Sad Everyday Suburban Professional Man Who Happens to Be Jewish submitted by ekjensen on July 22, 2020, 9:14am Whatever can go wrong to this regular guy including getting little to no helpful spiritual advice is Lawrence's life, and then just when It improves you are left without end. But, I don't need a part II film in this case. PS. His nightmares are much more exciting than the blasé characters surrounding him. Hmmn, a black comedy? what is the definition of a black comedy?

Love it so much submitted by jibkidder on June 18, 2022, 1:22pm I feel mixed about the Coen brothers, but I saw this movie in the theater more than once and would gladly see it in the theater every Thanksgiving from here on out. They reached the perfect tone with this comedy, by far my favorite Coen Brothers film.

so beautiful submitted by graytabby on August 7, 2022, 8:30pm this is such a great movie :)
