Recommended submitted by klickitat on August 6, 2012, 9:21am Lowry's first picture book is semi-autobiographical and based on her relationship with her father, who served overseas for most of her early childhood. By chance, I happened to have read Lowry's photo essay memoir Looking Back: A Book of Memories right before Crow Call and therefore recognized many details that inspired this story. I recommend Looking Back if you're interested in learning more about this book's backstory or Lowry's life in general.

As Lowry states in the concluding author's note, although this story is focused on a very specific relationship between a father and daughter, it will speak to all parents and children at least on some level. Sometimes the people we love most feel like strangers to us. This book gently addresses the complexity of the parent/child bond, while also telling a stand alone story of a day out.

Ibatoulline's illustrations are pitch perfect, evoking family snapshots and an era that is receding from memory.
