Classic Rom-Com Formula submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:24pm This is a by-the-numbers romantic comedy, for both better and worse, with outstanding casting and a beautiful setting (Sitka, Alaska) setting it apart from the pack. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have amazing and believable chemistry as a nose-to-the-grindstone editor and her devoted, ever-suffering assistant, respectively, and their gradual turn from amused animosity to true understanding is a joy to watch. The supporting cast is no less talented or convincing and the family dynamic provides a solid emotional anchor as the story progresses. Unfortunately, the film does involve a few uncomfortable moments around (lack of) consent and also appropriates indigenous spirituality. Merely stating that Betty White’s character has indigenous ancestry (in a throwaway line, nonetheless) doesn’t excuse it; the scene’s emotional developments are necessary to the plot, but the writers could have easily come up with hundreds of better ways to make them happen. This is an unfortunate mark against what is otherwise a delightful, and happily predictable, entry in the genre and in the end I do still recommend the film with a few reservations.
