A Solid Cover of an Iconic Album submitted by Meginator on July 25, 2022, 10:33pm Cheap Trick has big shoes to fill with this album, and their style makes for a surprisingly good fit with both an orchestra and with the range of styles employed throughout “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Their versions of these classic songs, each a piece of brilliant songwriting in its own right, stick closely to the originals but add a few interesting wrinkles, largely in the shape of different vocal styles or increased emphasis on the guitars. One particularly notable diversion is Joan Osborne’s cameo appearance as the main vocalist on “Lonely Rita”, which gives the song a pleading quality beyond that of the original recording. This album is a work of love and doesn’t stray too far from its inspiration, but it is a fitting tribute to one of the most consistent and successful album-length recordings of all time.
