"A novel of vampires, werewolves, and parasols."--Cover.
Includes extras: meet the author, interview, and excerpts from Changeless and Etiquette & espionage.
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Parasol Protectorate Begins submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 20, 2013, 1:35am The first of the five Parasol Protectorate novels, "Soulless" introduces us to Alexia Tarabotti, a single woman in Victorian London who refuses to play society's games that demand a woman act weak and scamper after potential husbands. Her mother and sister despair about her future, but Alexia is far more interested in saving herself--and Great Britain--from vampires who attack innocent people.
As a preternatural (a soulless being who is the opposite of supernatural creatures and can instead turn them human while she touches them), she is a unique being, yet she would hated by the supernatural community and shunned by humans if they knew her secret.
I highly recommend this series, especially to anyone who enjoys steampunk and/or fantasy. The plot keeps readers turning the pages.
Be forewarned, some parts are a tad risque. If it were a movie, it would be rated "R."

A steampunk fantasy like no other submitted by a0710 on July 6, 2017, 8:20am I am absolutely in love with this series! The first book, Souless sets up a classic steampunk world with an interesting twist. Those with an excess of soul are vampires and werewolves and those without a soul are the rare preternatural. Alexia Tarabotti, the protagonist falls into the latter category. She serves as an excellently well rounded main character, having her fair share of flaws while also being delightfully kick-butt. Not only will you fall in love with her, but with the multi of entertaining side characters as well. Carriger has a talent for making sure her characters leave an impression. This book has action, adventure, and romance, all in a cleverly written Victorian package. You will want to crawl into the world Gail Careiger creates and since there are 5 books in total, you won't have to leave for a long time

Loved this book! submitted by Nancianna Girbach on February 4, 2019, 12:37pm I want to be Alexia Tarabotti when I grow up...........wonderfully eccentric, sharp witted, and fearless.........one of the best female characters created..........and Lord Maccron is not bad either.......:)

Love the series! submitted by wellscai on July 10, 2020, 6:50pm I am not usually into steampunk or paranormal stuff but this book was AMAZING. I love Alexia as a character, and the world-building is so extensive that you get sucked in. The plot was compelling and I couldn't put it down once I got into it. You grow to love all of the side characters (and don't worry, a lot of them get their own books down the road). I also highly recommend the Finishing School series (prequels that are more middle grade/YA) and the various stand-alone romances that follow up on some of the side characters.

Awesome series submitted by amd12 on August 27, 2020, 10:18am This book kept me reading and laughing. The author has a great way of describing things to make you see them.

clever and hilarious submitted by Princess Cimorene on July 21, 2021, 7:20pm I am now on a mission to get everyone I know to read this series. I get so much joy out of these characters, the world they inhabit, and the twist and turns of their lives. Fantastic concept and super memorable.
