COMMUNITY REVIEWS

magnificent! submitted by camelsamba on August 3, 2011, 11:26am The rhymes and rhythm of this story are magnificent. And it has a touch of silliness as you would expect from Margaret Mahy. Mabel blows a bubble that carries off her baby brother. How will he be rescued? Watch out for Abel:

But Abel, though a treble, was a rascal and a rebel,
fond of getting into trouble when he didn't have to sing.

His nefarious intentions and a pebble in his sling are counteracted by quick thinking on the part of Mabel, Tybal, Greville, and the jogger (christened Neville). How do they do it? You'll have to read the book to find out about what the people there still prattle (there is lots of tittle-tattle).

Wonderful! submitted by betsywil on August 22, 2014, 9:10am The wordplay is great, the text is fun to read aloud, and the story is ultimately reassuring.
If you have a toddler in your life, read this book.

Good for Dr. Seuss Fans submitted by Sara W on June 22, 2015, 8:19am This book engages both my toddler and myself - this is definitely not a book the reader can sleepwalk through! The book is full of clever wordplay, rhymes, assonance, and straight-up tongue-twisters. We borrowed this book after we'd burned through a lot of Dr. Seuss with great success and my child is similarly interested, even though the author, while silly, is using her thesaurus instead of nonsense words. It's been a great addition to our reading shelf!

So cute. submitted by hajaraya on March 29, 2020, 7:13pm My little cousin enjoyed reading this book.

So much fun to read!! submitted by JennJenn on July 31, 2020, 7:24pm I bought this book after my children were grown but it's so much fun to read that I still made them sit down and listen to it. The language in it is rich and delightful. As a teacher, my preschoolers also love it.
