A true-life novel about Lily Casey Smith (the author's grandmother) who at age six helped her father break horses, at age fifteen left home to teach in a frontier town, and later as a wife and mother ran a vast ranch in Arizona where she survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy--but despite a life of hardscrabble drudgery still remained a woman of indomitable spirit.

A Wonderful Story submitted by monkk on July 1, 2011, 6:21pm I'd been putting off this book (even though I loved Jeannette Wall's The Glass Castle) I think because it's listed as fiction. Well, I finally picked it up and couldn't put it down. It also inspired me to read The Glass Castle again (for the fourth time!)
wonderful submitted by michael007 on July 4, 2013, 7:16am The book "Half broke horses : a true-life novel" is wonderful!
Riveting submitted by eharvey on August 5, 2014, 10:46pm While I was perhaps the only person ever to have thought The Glass Castle was dull, I absolutely loved Walls' other book, Half-Broke Horses. The heroine, Lily (Walls' grandmother) is a pistol of a woman whose spirit and determination reminded me of my own grandmother who grew up around the same time period. Once this story got going, it was difficult to put it down.
