"This is a Borzoi book"--T. p. verso.
This is the story of a teenage girl's journey from a small Midwestern swim team to her first state meet, her brutal professional training, and the final, record-breaking swims that lead to her dizzying ascent to the Olympic podium in Barcelona. It's the story of a girl who discovers, in the loneliness of adolescence, in the family tragedies that threaten to engulf her, the resilience of the human spirit and the spectacular power of her own body.--From publisher description.

Strong Beginning
submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 10:21am
I really liked the stream-of-consciousness, first-person narrative beginning. I think I wish the entire book had that same rushing language. That really grabbing tone sort of faded away as the plot progressed and I became less and less engaged through the end of the novel.
Overall, the book didn't leave much of an impression on me. I sometimes finish a book, walk away thinking I didn't like it, and then have difficulty getting it out of my head. This wasn't one of those books. I just didn't get invested. Despite the adorable cover.
