There are many great things about this cult classic: the action, the humor, the cast and crew - but what's really fantastic is how it uses tropes by both playing into them as well as subverting them. Kurt Russell is the lead, but his character isn't the one having the classic Hero's Journey. In fact, he's the meathead sidekick (though not 100% of the time, because the movie doesn't keep any character any one thing). The women leads get immediate strengths and character beats, and while there is plenty of damsel-in-distress plot, there is also a good bit of the damsels getting some good writing.
But there's also lots of explosions and crazy fight scenes, evil sorcerers and grotesque villians. It embraces its own cheesiness in just the right way.
A Classic submitted by GJBarnett2 on July 22, 2021, 11:47pm Really stands up to re-watching. A unique classic.
One of My Favorites submitted by ChallngOfTheStrs on August 29, 2021, 11:48pm A cult classic and perfect for those who love karate movies, action movies, and '80s movies. There is so much here to love. Kurt Russell is perfect as Jack Burton; it's the role he was born to play. The jokes are great, albeit probably too subtle for today's audience. The movie has no problem laughing at itself but it's just so good in the end that you'll be sure to love it too!
Cult Classic submitted by kyrabrazell on August 9, 2022, 12:36pm An all around funny movie that is my go to one on bad days. An all around great movie that has everything you could ever ask for.
