The Meaning of Suffering
submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 1, 2019, 10:19pm
It makes the case that the primary motivation in one’s life is neither pleasure (as proposed by Sigmund Freud) nor power (as proposed by Alfred Adler), but meaning and purpose. Frankl’s story is worth the read: (1) as a reminder of the depths and heights of human nature, and the nature of hopes and despairs that rule our existence, (2) for the idea that life is primarily about the search for meaning and the kinds of choices we can make to establish significance in our lives .
Must read submitted by crp on August 9, 2019, 11:05pm I return time and again to this book to remind me about one man’s story on a journey in which he lost almost everything he had, and the horrors of ww2 and Nazi Germany, and yet survived to tell his story and the work of a lifetime. A psychiatrist by training, this work is riveting without being too graphic or boundary violating. Reading about chamber pots and disease is just one small detail along the way. It is the way he tells his story and his ideas about his theories that is striking and long lasting.
Life changing submitted by saraschopp on July 31, 2022, 1:33pm This book really put my life and problems into perspective. It was recommended to me by a psychologist and I will forever be grateful.
Favorite quote from the book submitted by akrrr08 on August 5, 2023, 11:40am The author writes, "Having been is also a kind of being, and perhaps the surest kind." The book depicts the horrors and pains of the Holocaust but also the warmth and power of humans and their struggle to keep going.
