Inspector Gently submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 27, 2012, 11:58am In a fairly realistic portrayal of northeastern England in the 1960s, Detective George Gently of Scotland Yard has gotten himself assigned to a local police force, but the work is not nearly as easy as he expected. For one, he cannot understand the local "Geordie" accent and has to have a sergeant assigned to him to translate the local slang (viewers may recognize as the Knight Bus driver in one "Harry Potter" film).

The series shows the sexism, racism and other prejudices of the era, as well as the police corruption and unhappiness it all brought.

Series pilot submitted by willow on August 25, 2015, 8:59pm In this first episode, Inspector George Gently's wife is murdered (deliberate hit and run) by a criminal named Joe Webster, who then moves on to Northumberland. Gently follows him there and then gives up his plan of retirement, moving there instead. He investigates the torture and murder within the biking community.

This is probably the most grisly of any of the episodes of this series, because it shows scenes of the murderer committing crimes.

It is not a cozy series wherein murder is bloodless and an opportunity for entertainment.
