Politics and Research

This DVD contains two very different films, both narrated by David Suzuki and both about 50 minutes long, circa 2005.
The first one, The Last Giants, centers on the political scene surrounding whaling. After a century of whaling that nearly wiped out whale populations, a moratorium on commercial whaling was established in 1986 -- but with loopholes. This film explores the controversy surrounding this moratorium and the International Whaling Commission.
The second one, Keepers of Memory, chronicles the research efforts of the Sedna IV science team to record the behavior of the Right Whales in the North Atlantic -- the planet's most endangered large-whale species -- from their exuberant mating rituals to detailed family trees of the remaining population, now fewer than 350.
