High-Concept Alphabet Art submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2021, 5:32pm I recommend that anyone planning on sharing this with a skittish or easily scared reader gives it a once-over first, as the drawings and subject matter are a bit grisly and might frighten or otherwise put off some readers. Neil Gaiman delivers a nicely dark tale that is a decided change of pace from typical alphabet book fare, from his homophonic use of “c” and a late switcheroo to the use of an expanded vocabulary. Readers have to fill in some of the blanks, given the format, and the narrative doesn’t always flow as easily as the vile water, but the book does offer a nicely innovative approach to a familiar format. The illustrations are dense and difficult to parse, but they also hold a number of surprises both pleasant and ghastly. This book will appeal to a very specific audience (I actually know someone I can’t wait to recommend this to), but its neo-Victorian darkness in both words and pictures definitely isn’t for everybody.
