1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. Father Flynn is a charismatic priest who is trying to upend the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier. The Sister is the iron-gloved principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. With the winds of political change, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James shares with Sister Aloysius her suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without any proof, besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn. This threatens to tear apart the community with its irrevocable consequence.
DVD, widescreen (1.85:1); Dolby Digital, 5.1 surround sound.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Masterful submitted by markwells on March 10, 2013, 12:41pm Meryl Streep is a master at her craft. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is no slouch himself. I enjoyed the dialogue between these two as well as the charming innocent portrayed by Amy Adams. I thought I had my mind made up as to the guilt or innocence of the Priest but in the end I was left in...doubt. Grade A-.

Incredible submitted by Flying Sheep on July 6, 2013, 1:51pm Doubt is one of my favorite movies. Meryl Streep plays Aloysius very well. The movie is very Freudian, where Aloysius represents the Superego (rules, discipline, order), Flynn represents the Id (liberty and indulgence) and James represents the Ego (forever trapped between the Id and the Superego). The best part is that this movie keeps you guessing, and by never answering the question as to whether or not Flynn is guilty, the viewer has to decide for himself/herself whether Flynn is an evil, manipulative, lying monster and Aloysius is the whistle-blower and hero, or if Flynn is the friendly and welcoming fatherly character and Aloysius is the combative, hateful, vehement dictator. An absolutely perfect movie I would recommend to anyone.

great acting submitted by Jackie77 on July 12, 2015, 8:52pm Wonderful acting by all. Story makes your stomach turn. The mother is the worst one ever...watch it and you'll know who.

See it Again submitted by sushai on June 28, 2017, 7:13pm One of those movies I saw when it came out and thought it was fine. Then, years later, I saw it again and realized how much of the subtleties of the story I'd missed the first time.

Meryl Streep submitted by Aveliney on July 3, 2018, 4:49pm Just. Yeah, that's all you need to know. Her acting never dissapoints and never seems contrived. She is the absolute epitome of perfection in every movie, but this one in particular seems to challenge her. She is absolutely fantastic. Not to mention the rest of the cast and the gripping story line.

Subtle, complex, tense movie with great performances all around submitted by MH17 on July 14, 2019, 4:27pm Masterful acting from Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman (may he rest in peace) and Amy Adams make this movie a must-see. The tension elevates with each twist and turn and the movie grapples with some important questions about the church, faith, sexuality and responsibility to others. I have seen this movie a half dozen times and could watch it a half dozen more. Truly a modern classic.
