the midwife submitted by a2sue on July 25, 2013, 10:58pm wonderful memoirs

Gritty memoirs submitted by amym on June 17, 2014, 11:51am This is much grittier than I expected. The author doesn't shy away from describing grinding poverty, abuse, death. It is very well-written and completely engrossing.

Calling all viewers submitted by zornm on July 18, 2014, 2:13pm If you love the tv series on PBS, you owe to yourself to read the actual memoir. Wonderful evocation of life in the East End of London after WWII.

Listened to the book on CD submitted by cjkoho on July 25, 2014, 3:14pm I wanted to read this book because I fell in love with the show on PBS. Initially, I was really disappointed that Vanessa Redgrave wasn't reading it (LOVE her voice). Worth sets the stage so beautifully that it didn't really matter who read it to me, I was drawn in and couldn't wait to get on the bus to plug myself in every morning and evening.

You can clearly see the stories featured in the PBS show, but there's more to the book than just those stories.

the book on which the show is based submitted by 21621031390949 on August 14, 2016, 10:11am This is Nurse Jenny's first of three memoirs of her time served as a district nurse in the very poor side of London. Interesting stories about various patients cared for by a young nurse. Honestly told, admitting her own foibles and inadequacies, one has to admire Jenny's pluck, especially in her day and age.

Compelling and Educational submitted by feshile on June 14, 2021, 8:04pm This book, as well as its two sequels, were really good. I was hooked from the first page. The characters were real personalities, and though I read it a few months ago at this point, I still remember a lot of the stories in vivid detail. After reading, I felt more grounded in the reality of living in that time period, rather than just what is taught in the history books. It changed my perception of both nuns and medical history, and did so in a very engaging way. 5 stars!
