Herzog and Nosferatu submitted by celesteh on March 19, 2010, 2:16pm If you've never seen Werner Herzog's take on Dracula, you're in for something special with "Nosferatu: The Vampyre/Phantom der Nacht" from 1979. The film is a tribute to F.W. Murnau's silent film from 1922, a film that Herzog considered to be the most important film to come out of Germany. This particular set contains two DVD discs. Why? The movie was simultaneously shot in both English and German! Pretty amazing. Watch the English, then watch the German - you can decide which you prefer.

Veteran actor Klaus Kinski comes close to Max Schreck from the 1922 film, although I think he's more human-like in his personality. He was almost a sympathetic character, and his final scene in the film is a sight to see. The beautiful Isabelle Adjani is wonderful as "Lucy Harker" (a character variation from the Stoker novel). The sets and scenery are gorgeous - filmed mainly in The Netherlands. Another great aspect: the music. German Krautrock band Popul Vuh provided the soundtrack for the film, and I find it to be one of its best qualities. I enjoyed it so much I had to track it down for my own.
