Two Outstanding Halves of a Whole submitted by Meginator on June 14, 2023, 11:18am This album is a tale of two halves, and both are absolutely incredible. The first few tracks are emotionally vulnerable and do a great job of showcasing Beyoncé’s powerful voice and her ability to hold and sustain notes to excellent dramatic effect. Despite mostly consisting of ballads performed at slow tempos, the songs are memorable and have the huge hooks you expect from one of the world’s most famous and most enduring pop stars. The second half of the album kicks into gear immediately with the timeless “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and maintains its momentum from there, although none of the subsequent songs quite have the same dynamic impact. Between its two parts, the album feels like an intimate journey, and nearly any song could be a standout single although they still fit together remarkably well. The album is well-rounded, instantly memorable, and easily one of the best pop records of the past few decades, with incredible staying power to boot. This is the kind of project that shows why Beyoncé is so revered, and it’s a great place to start if you’re curious about why she has such a massive reputation. It’s just…so good.
