COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Brilliant Insight into the Chinese Cultural Revolution through the lives of the people submitted by MH17 on July 14, 2019, 5:09pm A stunning examination of life during the Cultural Revolution with big ideas writ small in the lives of damaged and disrupted by the state's violent, borderline torturous execution of a young woman in a small village in China. The execution has a ripple effect on the community and changes the lives of many in surprising ways. With spare prose and a tone that is effectively detached, often somewhat humorous, Li writes with humanity and compassion about all characters, from the sympathetic to the less so, making this work a real triumph. It's a warning about many things, mainly the perils of giving the state too much power, too much influence in the lives of the people. Brilliant. Five out of five.
