In this gripping thriller, a scientific expedition in Antarctica stops for a live news feed. As the CNN journalist Gracie Logan begins her report, a massive, shimmering sphere of light suddenly appears in the sky, enveloping the ship in luminous white light before disappearing as mysteriously as it arrived--the entire event witnessed by an incredulous world audience. Meanwhile, a monk in Egypt experiences visions that seemed connected, and back in Boston, Matt Sherwood learns that his brother's death may have been actually murder related to this erupting worldwide controversy over the meaning of this "sign" in the sky.

flawed thriller submitted by ssands on September 23, 2013, 8:21pm This was a fast-paced book that jumped between several converging plots. It kept me interested and continuously reading for several days. However, I don't think this book is for everyone. It is not particularly well-written, which may pull some readers out of the story. For example, it has long, detailed descriptions of the action scenes, written as though a movie was being described, rather than using fewer words to say the same thing. It's as though the author took "a picture is worth a thousand words" to heart and felt he had to write all thousand words. There are also some odd word choices such as "[He] was given a cosseted guest suite on the second floor." Coveted? Cosseting? It has a high body count, with the "good guy" responsible for a huge number of deaths. It also seems to have been a way for the author to explore his strong beliefs about the folly of blind adherence to fundamentalist religious authority. This might be amusing, annoying, or inspiring to different people. A previous reader was annoyed enough by it to have penciled in "B.S.!" in the margin.
