Completely drawn in, even as an adult submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 19, 2017, 11:50am I read the Alcatraz Smedry series some years back when my son discovered them, and couldn't help myself now that my daughter has found them. The series is utterly joyful and unexpected, with a magical system that defies logic on the face of it (Alcatraz's Talent is Breaking Things, and his grandfather's is that he is always Late To Everything). Sanderson breaks the fourth wall constantly, inviting the reader to reflect on what he is writing and why, and it's full of jokes and creativity. There are actually also dozens of thoughtful conversations you could pull out of these books, ranging from what do we think are detriments that really help us, to who is family, to the relative values of order vs. chaos, to various ways we "see" the world.

I think we read this aloud to our 2nd or 3rd grader (IIRC), but the story was so good that we would listen over the monitor so we didn't miss if it was the other parent's turn to read (or go catch up on the chapter before we read our next turn). My 5th grader read it the month she had to do a Fantasy book project. While the juvenile humor *eventually* got a little tiring, I enjoyed the entire 5-book series as a 40-something. Highly recommended to pretty much everyone.
