COMMUNITY REVIEWS

historical fiction submitted by adimarzo on July 5, 2011, 12:29pm I enjoyed reading this book because it is very descriptive of the time and place (pre- and post-World War II Hong Kong). I found myself checking wikipedia for background on the British occupation of Hong Kong. It was hard to really root for any of the main characters as they are all flawed in some way. But that is part of what makes the book authentic.

Took a long time to hook me submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 23, 2017, 4:09pm Found on a "staff recommends" shelf and then suggested by a fellow shopper at my favorite locally-owned book store, I think this was actually a very well-written book with an interesting story. (The basic plot is around expats in Hong Kong during WWII.) But it just didn't keep me turning pages and wanting to pick the book up until I was 3/4ths of the way through it.
