lots of hype submitted by klsyking on July 19, 2011, 12:47pm I found this book to be pretty average. It's a good, unique story, but too long and the characters are a little annoying... Maybe it's just that too much hype was built up and my expectations were too high.

Great book! submitted by bookher on June 15, 2013, 6:20pm I couldn't put this book down. I loved all the characters, well, except for two, but the others were very likable! I also learned about Ethiopian political history a little. Abraham Verghese is an excellent writer and included just enough medical description so that I understood what was happening but not so much that it lost me. I learned a lot about Africa in this book too. My book club just read it and it got an overall score of 9.5 out of 10!

Really refreshing read submitted by jenellenewman on September 11, 2013, 12:31pm This book is a worthwhile read. Verghese paints a picture with his words. I feel like I'm experiencing the culture of northern Africa while learning part of my own history from their point of view. Enlightening.

Wonderful read! submitted by glenna on June 17, 2016, 9:38pm The language in the novel flowed beautifully and the characters were very engaging. The story was interesting and held my interest. I was sorry when I reached the end.

Not convinced early, but won me over submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 20, 2017, 7:59am Early in this book I couldn't decide if I liked it. The narrator seemed to have way too much insight into the minds of those he was describing. The environment and surroundings seemed to be nearly another character, yet not one that interacted with the rest of the story. There were occasional moments that seemed more like the author beating the reader over the head with his personal opinion (esp. the Matron telling the donor from Texas why Coptic Christian Ethiopians weren't in need of Bibles) than the narrator telling an integral part of the story.

But then.... Pieces fell into place. Little bits included early bore full fruit later. Childhood character traits became major plot points in adults. Missing pieces were found.

It was compelling. It was really good. I see why this is such a best-seller these days. Definitely worth the read.

really good book submitted by MadMonkeyZ on June 18, 2018, 5:44pm Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles--and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined.
