Witch and part-time fairy godmother Desiderata Hollow dies and leaves her magic wand to sentimental, ineffective witch Magrat Garlick. To fulfill her new duties, Magrat, accompanied by senior witches Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, must go on what proves to be a long, eventful journey to the swampy city of Genua, in order to prevent housekeeper/secret heir Ella Saturday from marrying a prince.

my beloved diskworld submitted by ferdoble on August 11, 2011, 3:50pm To describe Terry Pratchett’s books is a difficult thing to do. The disc world series is in a word fantastic. Terry Pratchett, would seem to use the disk world, to take any theme, or know story and then twist it in his own very humorous way. These are not always laugh out loud funny (sometimes they are), bur rather the sort of funny that just sort of lifts your spirits a little bit.

I will say that in some cases there isn’t always a really strong story, sometimes its just his characters moving through one of those twisted themes. I like them all, you may want to start with the Most Von Lipwig story line (“Going Postal” and then “making money”) as at least the first one has a really great story line.

I love to pepper my reading queue with these books to keep all those books that take themselves seriously fresh and interesting.

I recommend reading them ALL.

OR listening to them. The two main narrators of Terry Pratchett’s books are Stephen Briggs & Nigel Planer and they take Terry Pratchett’s phenomenal writing to a whole new level.

Fun and funny! submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 13, 2012, 9:02pm "Witches Abroad" is exactly what you think it is: a story about witches who go on vacation outside their home country. It is the 12th of Sir Terry Pratchett's 39 Discworld novels. He has written so many because they are so popular. The British public rate him as one of their top favorite authors of all time.
This book is so entertaining that I continue to quote it regularly. I highly recommend it, but read "Equal Rites" and "Wyrd Sisters" first so you know the characters and Discworld already. While the book is humorous and entertaining it does not put down witches. Instead, it portrays them as three-dimensional characters who are smart, practical and well able to handle any crisis without the silly stereotypes.

discworld submitted by unknown on August 10, 2013, 10:59pm You know the story. The poor servant girl who gets to wear glass slippers and go to the ball marries the prince and lives happily ever after. That was before Terry Pratchett got ahold of the tale and put a few twists in it. Magrat Garlick, youngest member of a coven of witches, has just become a fairy godmother-wand and all. Though the wand seems to be hopelessly set on pumpkins for some reason. And she's got an assignment: to travel to the far away magical city of Genua and stop Emberella from going to the ball. Joining her on this quest is the earthy and often double entendre Nanny Ogg and the ever popular Granny Weatherwax.

Don't expect any kind of typical adventure tale here. Any one who has read Terry Pratchett knows that it won't be long until these three wyrd sisters traversing in "foreign parts" turn every familiar story topsy turvy in a combination of hysterical footnotes, hilarious reactions (check out how the witches deal with the running of the bulls) and sometimes downright poignant observations on humanity. Terry's humor is never devoid of the heart that keeps his work from becoming merely clever and slapstick. Instead, this book reads as an insightful look at human nature and the nature of stories, and how the two are intertwined.

This is Terry Pratchett's 12th Discworld novel and American fans who have been trying to get ahold of Pratchett's earlier work will be delighted to add this book to their collection. For new readers, (I'm a little envious of anyone discovering Pratchett for the first time) your journey into the wonderful, hysterical, whimsical and insightful Discworld novels has only just begun. There are more than twenty six tales of the Discworld to explore. This reprinted paperback version has a sneak peek at Pratchett's next release, NIGHT WATCH, at the back of the book. If you enjoy this book, please check out the rest of Mr. Pratchett's Discworld novels. To start at the beginning of stories featuring Granny Weatherwax, EQUAL RITES is her first introduction, but the better start is WYRD SISTERS which introduces the entire coven. The book to look for following WITCHES ABROAD is LORDS AND LADIES, this is the next book featuring Granny and the coven after their return from foreign parts.

One of my favorites in all of Discworld series submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on June 23, 2020, 10:48am Any Terry Pratchett novel, but specifically the ones involving the witches, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat and Tiffany Aching. The witches show concern for others in their society and a strong sense of honesty and reliability, something unfortunately lacking in most of our politicians and business leaders.

One of the best books submitted by dlfredrickson on July 3, 2021, 5:06pm I love the Discworld series, and the Witches and the Guards are probably my favorite characters. The reader of this book is amazing -he really get the characters.
