COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Not For Me submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 1:16am All the blurbs, reviews and book jacket descriptions led to me to understand this book was about a Russian Jew immigrant mother who can't forget the memory of her daughter and, craving a reunion, embarks on a cross-country trip to locate her, but that's not really the impression it left on me.

While I appreciated the language and some of Lillian's humor - by and large, I was put off by Lillian's frequent engagement in dirty, weird, sad or accidentally murderous sex.

Barbara Rosenblat is the ONLY narrator for a book populated by Yiddish characters and she does an excellent job bringing each character to life. If only it wasn't a life so driven by manipulative sexual situations and numbness, I might have enjoyed it more.
