COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Pensive and Personal submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2020, 9:31pm This is a slow-moving, pensive, personal album that calls back to cowboy ballads (sometimes literally) both in the music and the lyrics. Johnson’s songs ooze despair and introspection, though his vocals don’t do as much to carry the mood as the instruments and lyrics do. The tracks are okay, but few particularly stand out either among their companions here or against the backdrop of contemporary country music wrought large. It’s a good enough example of the genre, with ample helpings of slide guitar and pathos, but every track feels the same bar one (in which honky-tonk antics are wasted on unimpressive lyrical content). In the end, I appreciate this album’s artistry, but I didn’t actually enjoy it much; it’s missing a unique element that would make it more interesting.
