In post-war North Carolina, a member of a car-theft ring picks up an innocent nineteen-year-old Bible saleman and recognizes the young man as just the associate he needs--one who will believe he is working as an F.B.I. spy, one who will drive the cars he steals.

Reminded Me of Confederacy of Dunces
submitted by Sara W on June 21, 2011, 2:14am
I devoured this book and look forward to reading more Clyde Edgerton. It's a slim book that's over too soon but it reminded me of "A Confederacy of Dunces" in terms of the interwoven story line that progresses smoothly and intersects hilariously.
Henry Dampier, the main character, is a perfect concoction of innocence, determination, curiosity and dead-pan logic. He is well-imagined and and consistently his slightly odd self through the forward development of the plot as well as the flashbacks.
The cast of minor characters, from the dead cat woman to Marleen, Marleen, Marleen Green are so captivating that I wish their appearances lasted longer. Fortunately, I understand Edgerton's previous novels are equally satisfying, especially "Walking Across Egypt" and "Lunch at the Piccadilly."
