Mudbound takes on prejudice in its myriad forms on a Mississippi Delta farm in 1946. City girl Laura McAllen attempts to raise her family despite questionable decisions made by her husband. Tensions continue to rise when her brother-in-law and the son of a family of sharecroppers both return from WWII as changed men bearing the scars of combat.

Read by a Talented Cast submitted by Sara W on June 20, 2011, 8:37pm I recognized the title and knew it had gotten good reviews, but I admit I ultimately picked up the audiobook because it was performed by a cast of narrators. And they were AWESOME. This was a book with a distinct sense of place told in the distinct voices of the characters.

I liked that the action unfolded at different speeds based on who was narrating the chapter and the details noted and comments made were all unique to the person. It's a great way for the reader to experience these characters who are clearly and fully imagined by the author. We get to see them through the eyes of the other narrators as well as hear their words first hand.

The story itself is full of the prejudice of the Mississippi Delta, about the assumptions and expectations one family has for another. Both race and class breed prejudice and contempt, but I was also struck by Henry's treatment of his wife. No one was treated well in this novel - not a black sharecropper, not the dutiful city-bred wife, not the black housekeeper/midwife, not my poor favorite, hopeful, sweet Ronsel and not brothers Jamie and Henry.

Many of the actions came out of selfishness and, I guess, fear of change. Jordan's writing style and talent definitely bring the reader into the action, letting you feel what the characters feel and see what they see.

Great submitted by 0liviap0pp on August 22, 2011, 8:36am This is such a great Book on CD!

well-written and thought-provoking submitted by 21621031390949 on August 11, 2016, 9:18pm Excellent book, wonderful recording. The story is told through the eyes of 6 different people, and in this recorded version, read by 6 excellent readers. Each character is developed well, and each sheds his/her own light on the events of the story. Set in Mississippi during and after WWII, race relations is a predominant theme, woven with marriage relationships, parent-child, and sibling relationships.

I initially picked this book up because it was recommended for my older teen daughter, but then I listened to it and I'm glad I did. It's very engaging, well-written, and thought-provoking.
