Martha Jones
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 15, 2013, 10:17pm
With the introduction of the Doctor's new companion--medical student Martha Jones--the show improves tremendously. Unless some of the Doctor's previous female companions, Martha is smart, brave and strong. The only negative is that she, like all too many other companions, is hopelessly in love with him. Nonetheless, she is one of my favorite companions and she never stops campaigning for what's right.
Freema Agyeman is one of the first actors of color on the show, which is an improvement over the almost zero in the past. The fact that Martha is one of only two longer-term companions of color, however, says something about the show.
While I enjoyed the episode about Shakespeare (especially the implications it makes about the Bard), I'm disappointed that the show falls back on the old stereotype about evil witches.
