Better submitted by marshd on February 5, 2011, 1:48pm Much better than City of Bones, though it still provided obvious "problems" and horribly cliche phrasing.

Worse submitted by glennauerbach on June 16, 2012, 2:59pm This book was worse than the City of Bones book. It was a lot more confusing and more predictable.

Wow submitted by xjasx on June 16, 2012, 11:51pm It was a good book, everybody has their opinions on this, personally I think it was better then the city of bones but thats just me

cool book submitted by Memoria1224 on July 5, 2012, 4:57pm I liked this book. It is better than the first book.

Okay submitted by bluepapaya on June 14, 2014, 5:07pm It's not as good as the city of bones, but still worth reading

Still good submitted by VickyB77 on June 12, 2015, 8:36am I don't think it was it was better or worse than City of Bones. If you enjoyed the first, keep going through the series!

Better than most 2nd books submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 11, 2017, 8:24pm I must have been wanting this second book in the Mortal Instruments series -- I hurried through my last book because this was burning a hole on my reading shelf.

Second stories in trilogies often suffer from their placement. They aren't the exciting set-up of the first, and they aren't the exciting climax of the last. But without giving any spoilers, this contained an absolutely unexpected twist to one of the main characters' lives that added the page-turning excitement that makes a book fun.

I still don't buy into the idea of 15-year olds who can save the world, but that's OK.

Enjoyed it submitted by KOH on August 13, 2017, 11:04am This is fun YA fluff. I liked it.

A Solid Second Book submitted by ajstemp on June 27, 2018, 12:16pm Like the rest of the Mortal Instruments series, City of Ashes is captivating, but not groundbreaking YA fiction. If you're familiar with the genre, you'll probably find many of the same themes here.

That being said, the world these stories exist in is fascinating and fun to occupy, and City of Ashes builds on a lot of what City of Bones established. For a fun (but not too serious) read, I would recommend it.

Not my favorite of the series... but keep going! submitted by hdcooper on June 17, 2019, 1:30pm City of Ashes is not my favorite book in the Mortal Instruments series, but since the series is overall a great read, I highly recommend you continue reading. The characters do receive some development in this book, but overall I feel it is the weakest of the series.

Solid submitted by c_zhang on June 27, 2019, 10:29pm It's not nearly the best of the series, but the characters develop nicely, which is good. Clary's still annoying though.

an awesome book submitted by RowPio on July 12, 2019, 7:01pm Not the best one in the series but still really good.

Solid submitted by KatyaS on July 12, 2019, 8:40pm Worse that other in the series.

Good book submitted by jasonc1177 on July 31, 2019, 7:49pm i would say, its pretty good and has a good storyline and has a bit of mystery in it.

A good sequel submitted by Nay7 on August 15, 2020, 11:04pm Very fun read

Save Simon at all costs! submitted by ShanleyBelle on August 22, 2021, 7:43pm Great middle book in the first trilogy. 10/10!
