COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Surprisingly good submitted by CasualTim on February 18, 2010, 3:12pm The setup has so much working against it, with the potential to fall into a mean, feel-bad movie or a zany one trick pony. I was amazed at how well this movie handles itself, which is all the more impressive since, at the time, I was so annoyed with Gosling after having just seen the very overrated Half Nelson. It's heartwarming, interesting, and well-paced. In the tradition of small-town community escapades like Waking Ned Devine.

heartwarming not schmaltzy submitted by katiewhitney on February 19, 2010, 2:42pm Instead of ridiculing or exiling Lars for his delusions, his neighbors, coworkers, and family believe in his fiction. They accept the girlfriend he's chosen (plastic as she is) as part of their world, befriending her, and in the process, helping Lars heal some old wounds. I can't imagine a better representation of what it means to be in a community.

A surprise in everyway submitted by goreygirl on June 17, 2012, 11:46am When you read the description of this film you will probably expect a silly and overblown sort of story. This is a sensitive, well-acted, moving and ultimately unique and wonderful story. The strange premise sets up a story about family, life disappointments, kindness, empathy, mental illness and love. Gosling is just great and the music is a highlight as well. Highly recommend!

Not really a comedy submitted by Ilyjtwya on July 18, 2012, 3:11am I agree with the previous reviews of this film, it definitely was not what I was expecting. It was wonderful to see the community come together for Lars. It is more of an unusual dramatic story with a few laughs than a comedy though.

Memorable submitted by rats on January 1, 2014, 12:24am It has been years since I saw this film and I still think of it. Heartwarming. Unique. Quirky. Not for those who insist that people can't change. One of my all time favorites.
