difficult but good
submitted by camelsamba on July 12, 2011, 4:47pm
This book was difficult to read. At the surface level, it was difficult because of the Arabic/Islamic terminology that regularly occurred - I felt like I needed a glossary to refer to. Although these terms were usually not central to advancing the story, it did result in making me feel like an outsider - but I *am* an outsider to the culture portrayed, so I suppose that is appropriate. On a deeper level, it was difficult to read because of many challenging situations Khadra is placed in because of her identity as an observant Muslim girl in the 70s and 80s. There are difficult concepts of identity and growth and questioning core beliefs. It's an interesting portrayal of "coming of age" from a perspective most of us in the US will never have considered.
[And as a lighter aside: I really loved it when Khadra and a friend pick up a book of poetry by Mohja Kahf (the author) in the used bookstore! :^]
