I was so excited to see this- I mean, how can you go wrong with Robert Redford? But the movie ended up being rather slow, the acting overdone, and even Redford didn't really stand out. Great story- I just couldn't get in to this version.

Beautifully haunting

I saw the Great Gatsby with DiCaprio (2013) because the trailor showed the sumptuous aspect of this story to a far greater degree than the Redford (1974) version. Neither Redford nor DiCaprio, in my opinion play Gatsby convincingly but Redford still seems to have more new understated class than DiCaprio. In short, the new Gatsby may have more visual richness, but I still prefer this version. I saw this movie as a child when it came out and it is still one of my preferred films. Acting notwithstanding, the twists and turns of the story line and the story's message make it one of Hollywood's more intriguing films.
