A Guy lives in Dublin. He is a guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad's Hoover repair shop by day. By night, he sings and plays for money on the Dublin streets. A Girl from Czechoslovakia loves to play the piano when she gets a chance. During the day she does odd jobs. At night she takes care of her mom and her daughter. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other. Girl helps Guy put together a demo disc so he can take it to London in hope of landing a music contract. At the same time, the Guy and the Girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Lovely submitted by erksnerks on July 8, 2011, 10:13am Beautiful tunes, street scenes and characters. Passion for life, music, and the companionship of making music with whomever crosses your path. A musical of sorts that makes you dream along.

zzz submitted by drouhardte on July 17, 2011, 1:45pm My wife found this film satisfying, but I was bored out of my gourd. Very little happens. What does happen is difficult to go along with, which either is a result of, or results in the difficulty I experienced in trying to care about the characters.

Tony and Oscar Award Winner submitted by crazypockets on June 16, 2012, 3:22pm This is a simple, sweet movie made on virtually no budget that went on to win an Oscar for best song and has now been turned into a Tony award winning musical. The music is really great. I became an instant Glen Hansard/The Frames/The Swell Season fan after seeing this, and I still listen to the soundtrack over and over.

Great! submitted by alumeng.ajl on August 4, 2012, 6:44pm Once is so wonderful! The story is so sweet, and the style of filming is so different.

Great submitted by kelleyc on August 3, 2016, 10:04am Great story, incredible music.

Indie Feeling submitted by Meginator on August 10, 2017, 3:57pm Once has a great indie feeling about it, in the best way. It's seemingly simple, with a relatively straightforward plot, but it's done so well that it doesn't matter. The songs are memorable long after the film ends, and the whole production is very nice. I don't know whether it deserves the almost cult status it achieved in its heyday, but it's a pretty good film.

Simple, feel-good movie submitted by ferielp on August 17, 2018, 12:30pm Nothing special about it. The way the male lead comes onto the woman, explains it away as mixed signals when she rejects him, and then continues to pursue her with her doing little to dissuade it is a storyline I hope will soon die out. The music is lovely.

simple submitted by shivatavane on July 17, 2019, 9:55pm great action

I love this film submitted by Nehemiah9 on August 3, 2019, 7:31pm It's the most realistic musical that I've seen before (not that most are trying) but every song in the film made sense and was believable. I love the tone and message of this film and it's the kind of film that really resonates with those of us who have experienced "just barely, almost dating" someone.

s submitted by kscapellie on July 11, 2020, 3:58pm the style of filming was different

Heartwarming submitted by sara on August 15, 2020, 4:34pm I really liked this movie, but the male I watched it with did not like it.
