Special features: "Stepping into character:" an exclusive behind the scenes look at Marion Cotillard's transformation into Edith Piaf's character, including an interview with the director and award-winning Marion Cotillard; Edith Piaf documentary.
Marion Cotillard, Sylvie Testud, Pascal Greggory, Emmanuelle Seigner, Jean-Paul Rouve, Gérard Depardieu, Clotilde Courau, Jean-Pierre Martins, Catherine Allégret, Marc Barbé.
Edith Piaf was raised in a brothel, wrested from the only life she knew by her father so they could join the circus, Edith spent her teen years on the streets. She is finally "rescued" by a crime figure who gives her career a start, and, ultimately, her international success and final illness. She was always frail, sickly, malnourished, and wildly temperamental. She was often on drugs or alcohol, and she was always in search of true love. Middleweight boxer, Marcel Cerdan, captures her heart and gives her something to live for, besides her music--at least for a while.
DVD; region 1; widescreen (2.35:1) presentation.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I know why Marion Cotillard won that Oscar submitted by DBJC on June 19, 2013, 7:42pm I'm learning French. That's the main reason why I picked up this movie other than I love Marion Cotillard and I also enjoy Edith Piaf's music. With that said, I watched this movie to get some French practice in while learning about Edith Piaf. I can't really critique what parts of the movie were accurate and which weren't since I don't know all the details about Edith Piaf's life, but I can say that I learned a little bit more about her. The way that the movie is structured can be a bit confusing, but at least they have dates in the corner. What I liked best about the movie is Marion Cotillard's performance. WOW! I've seen her in so many other movies, but seeing her in this film completely gave me an understanding of why she won this Oscar. Her performance was exceptional. Absolutely exceptional. I wished things were pieced together a bit differently, but I can't deny Marion Cotillard's performance. If not for the actual movie, watch this for Marion! I should probably mention that this movie is rated R for brief nudity and substance abuse so this isn't a school friendly movie.

marion cotillard submitted by hcf on August 2, 2014, 4:22pm marion cotillard really embodied edith piaf

it really SUCKED. Too soap operish, too much of a chick movie. A TORTURE for any male to see. submitted by Tassos on March 3, 2022, 8:56am So I skipped most or all scenes and did NOT see it. My time is valuable, and this wretched, alcoholic, drug addicted fool, who had natural talent and squandered it to die at only 47, is too depressing a story anyway.
