This book tells a beautiful story, that's researched well, about a woman who was born in Sault Saint Marie before it was a part of the United States and before Michigan was a state. The story will surprise you greatly.
What, a person born Native American and Irish was writing like this, two hundred years ago, as a teen, way up there in Sault Saint Marie? Often, she wrote in Ojibwa first and then translated her poetry into English. She lived an amazing life and left a body of amazing poetry. No Michigan history book must ever omit her important story from here on out. Thank you to Robert Dale Parker for doing a magnificent job of finding, translating, and editing this poet's work, thus making this legacy of history and poetry accessible to twenty-first century readers.
