"In this course, we will explore Mesopotamian societies from the Neolithic era (c. 9,000 B.C.) to the defeat of the great Persian Empire at Gaugamela by Alexander the Great (331 B.C.) The study will take us from the world of international diplomacy with powerful neighbors in Egypt, Syria, and Anatolia to the mundane issues of daily life, such as providing food for the family, curing disease, and settling legal disputes. It examines archaeological discoveries, historical documents, and literary texts to explore how these lands between the rivers created a civilization that has contributed to the development of our own. A recurring them of the course is the creation of an urban lifestyle, which becomes increasingly sophisticated and complex as cultures expand."-- p. 1 of guidebook.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Really good info submitted by seadocks on August 5, 2013, 1:39pm I really liked these lectures. I know that some people may not like the speaking style of the instructor, with odd pauses at weird moments and a habit of moving her hand in front or near her face (it made me think of some kind of evil genius talking about taking over the world), but I was still able to get a lot of good info. At times it was easier to turn off the tv and just listen to the lectures through my surround sound than trying to watch and take in the info. She knows her stuff, just not a very fun lecturer. Then again I like lectures that have people that are funny or at least make it more like a conversation or change their tone and have fun with it.
