Engaging Study in Human Psyche submitted by rabindar on August 3, 2015, 6:11pm This is the third time in my life that I have read Tolstoy's "War and Peace". This classic period tale, set in Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, presents a poignant picture of human romance, retribution, love, compassion, desolation, hatred, joy, sorrow and naivety through the tales of three Russian aristocratic families - the Bezukovs, Rostovs and Bolkonskys. Everyone should read this epic (~1400 pages) at least once in their lives. One of the central themes is the dissolution of ideals, the powerlessness of human plans in the face of history and the farce it makes of "free will". Read it - you will get to relate to it in your own way and gain a richly satisfying experience.
Very lengthy, but enlightening. Requires close attention and re-reading. submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on August 14, 2019, 10:32am Through the individual stories of two well-known families, Tolstoy renders a Russia on the verge of an apocalyptic encounter with Napoleon Bonaparte's France. Tolstoy's superlative exploration of the moods of the cities and the emotions of a social order that faces the ominous movement of armies. Masterful exploration of a society's responses to the demands of both war and peace.
