Read by the author, kind of misogynist, but also entertaining submitted by christinacz on July 21, 2018, 9:37pm I listened to about half of it so far. Really entertaining on my road trip, he details all the personalities and sub cultural rites of passages in the restaurant industry! The misogyny is kind of dated but it probably accurately reflects the macho egotism of the industry.

Definitely makes your commute better! submitted by parlettes on August 6, 2018, 5:28pm Listening to Tony discuss his (mis)adventures in the culinary underbelly is fascinating. His personality certainly shines through in the swearing, colorful adjectives, and cleverly (but sometimes gross) descriptions of situations in kitchens all around the restaurant industry. I certainly won't step into a restaurant in NYC without thinking about his little bits of advice regarding what to look out for on menus. He talks about food with the same love that most people reserve for their partners or family.

Excellent submitted by majean on August 9, 2018, 6:13pm So good to hear this book read by the author. Especially now...

interesting, but not my favorite Bourdain creation submitted by kjshaffer on July 13, 2019, 6:32pm This was a really interesting listen, but at times, was a frustrating listen. The misogyny and harassment present in the kitchen environments were Bourdain worked were the things that got to me. Bourdain acknowledges the problems present in kitchens, but it felt like it wasn't enough when he basically said there were women who could be tough enough to succeed in those environments, so it wasn't entirely male dominated. Overall, the book was o.k., but I enjoyed Anthony's work and voice much more as I watched him on Parts Unknown.
