Harry James makes this movie submitted by rats on February 13, 2011, 12:57am This flick doesn't translate well into 2011. Yet watching Harry James play Flight of the Bumblebee on his trumpet, backed by his band the Music Makers, is great. Outside of what James' and his band perform there are few memorable songs. It seems very odd to have the story built around Lucille Ball, who is supposed to be so unknown that she is able to enter the prom night dance without anyone recognizing her. It's just not believable. In addition, all the main female performers seem 15 or more years older than the boys. I hardly ever notice costumes, but in this movie some of the prom dresses looked like they were mimicking Madonna's pointy-bra costume. Ball is always so elegant in movies, yet she is not shown to the best with the costumes on this set. Nancy Walker sings an enjoyable "clumsy" dance with Harry James. But the writing fails when she tries to be witty and self-deprecating. The insults about her looks--most of which she initiates--become tedious. June Allison sings and dances with her usual skill, but the songs are unremarkable.

I had to tell myself this was an interesting film because it shows several famous performers at the beginning of their careers or at transition points. And watching and listening to Harry James perform was well worth the time.
