COMMUNITY REVIEWS

odd voice submitted by rats on September 22, 2011, 12:17am I was surprised I actually read this book all the way to the end. The main character has such an odd voice, I wanted to run for the hills. But I held my nose and ended up becoming numb to the annoyance. The author writes this character with constant asides that have nothing to do with advancing the story line, usually. It's like listening to your ditsy aunt who rambles off onto weird tangents that are annoying and dizzying. I was surprised the author was able to keep this voice up throughout the whole book. The plot wasn't all that good. The recipes are just placed in the book as separate chapters with no reference in the text except for one sentence where curry is mentioned.

It wasn't a bad book, just unusually odd. Perhaps that's why this series got published as it takes place in a community that isn't written about in novel form very often: the Amish and Mennonite communities.

I can't see myself reading another book by this author, but I can see why some people might be fans. The writing just doesn't taste true to me.
