Wow! submitted by slugwhisperer on July 12, 2013, 8:09pm Never thought about the early history of the game until I read the book. Now I'm intrigued.

Made me (a non-sports person) care submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 8, 2014, 8:07am Recommended by a friend who cares about justice and about sports, this book is another in my "I'll read anything about anything as long as it's well written" series. It's the story of the Carlisle Indian School, a government-run cultural brainwashing program in the days when "the West was won" and Indians were being forced onto reservations. It's also about the invention, creation, and innovation that was football.

And who'd'a thunk it? It made me care! This was well researched, well written, fascinating, and I learned a ton. Occasionally, for me who knows next to nothing about sports history, it was a bit heavy with name-dropping. On the other hand, it was the author's ability to combine history with personal stories that drove the book.

If you're looking for something out of your usual range, you would do well to consider this.
